Pro-Iran militia groups in Iraq on Monday, July 4th staged a new rocket attack against Camp Liberty near Baghdad International Airport, home to the remaining members of the Iranian opposition group People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), destroying a large number of trailers and creating havoc amongst the community of Iranian refugees.
Early reports indicate a number of the residents in the camp have been injured and transferred to a nearby hospital for medical care. This is the latest rocket attack against this camp after the deadly 29 October 2015 attack that left over 24 residents killed and a large section of the camp leveled. This new rocket barrage is staged after 8 days of an intensified siege on Liberty imposed at the behest of the Iranian regime through the crackdown committee controlling daily affairs in the camp. All deliveries of fuel, food, medicine and hygiene products into Liberty have been banned and most recently even the rented sewage dump tracks are not allowed into the camp. This has left the residents facing a major hygiene crisis as the black water tanks will overflow into the residential areas.

The residents of Camp Liberty were promised protection by the United Nations, the U.S. government and the government of Iraq. However, they have been the targets of five different rocket attacks from February 2013 to this day, leaving dozens of residents killed and injured. This recent attack has left the residents in further fear of their uncertain future in Iraq.
